The latest available statistics - published in February 2011 - show that in England and Wales in 2009, approximately 113,949 marriages ended in divorce, with marriages lasting, on average, only about 11.4 years. (70% of all divorces were attributed to first marriages). In previous generations, it was not unusual for a couple to celebrate their 25th, 30th, or even 50th wedding anniversary.
Relationships today are far more complex. For earlier generations, the roles for men and women in relationships were clearly defined and each knew what was expected of them. If each partner lived up to those expectations, there was a reasonably good chance that the relationship would last. However, ongoing developments of technology, the expanded roles of women in society and increased life expectancy have brought about a significant change in these traditional roles.
Today, relationships depend more on communication, intimacy, negotiation and understanding. Many relationships go through a bad patch. If you are experiencing difficulties with your own relationship, it might be a good idea to get some professional advice.
